ESSAY 1
Feeling Secure-Even
without a Home
When you walk
downtown in almost any large American city, you see many homeless people
(complex). They sit on with the
streets their shopping carts full of their meager belongings and often ask for
money(compound). Do they make you
nervous? Do they scare you? The truth is that most homeless people do not want
to be homeless, and they are afraid of the same things that you are(compound). Homeless people, like everyone else, need basically
three things to feel safe in their environment. (simple)
First,
and most importantly, homeless people need to feel physically safety.(simple) For you and
me, this feeling comes when we enter our apartment or house and lock the door
behind us(compound). For a homeless
person, this feeling is a luxury(simple).
They may go to a shelter at night, but sometimes the people in the shelter can
be dangerous, especially if they are mentally ill(compound). Then in the morning, they are kicked out of the shelter
and forced to roam the streets(compound).
For these reasons, a lot of homeless people claim a certain bench or street
corner as their own(compound). They
are trying to feel physically secure(simple).
Second, homeless
people need to have a dependable source of food(simple). This is such a basic need that most of us don’t
even think about it, but for homeless person, finding food can be a full-time
job(compound). There are places to
go for meals that are usually run by local governments or churches, but there
isn’t enough food for everyone to have three nutritionally balanced meals a day(compound). Getting one meal a day is
considered good for homeless person(simple).
Other food comes from scrounging through the garbage or begging on the streets(compound). It is difficult to feel
secure in your environment when you don’t know where your next meal is coming
from(complex).
Finally, to feel
safe, you need to know that if you get sick or injure yourself, you can get the
medical treatment you need(compound). In the United States, this is
becoming increasingly difficult even for people who have places to live but
don’t have a lot of money(compound).
It’s almost impossible for homeless person(simple).
It’s true that homeless people can usually go to an emergency room in a
hospital if they are gravely sick or injured, but some hospitals these days are
turning away anyone who doesn’t have health insurance(compound). If the sickness or injury is not severe, there are some
clinics for homeless people, but, again, the need for exceeds the availability(compound).
In summary, the need to feel physically
safe, the need for dependable food source, and the need for medical care when
necessary are essential for all of us(compound). The constant
struggle to obtain these is why homeless people do not feel secure in their
environment(simple).

ESSAY 3
Mardi Gras
My trip to the Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans was an unforgettable
experience.Mardi Gras is a street party where people dress in costumes,
watch parades, listen to bands, and celebrate all day and night. Usually
occurring in February or March, it attracts tourists from all over the world.
The first time I went to Mari
Gras, which is French for “Fat Tuesday”, my friends and I woke up early on
carnival Day to find a good place to watch the parades. We took blankets,
cameras, and drinks.
By the time
the parade began around 11 A.M., the crowds were huge and noisy. We watched
brightly decorated floats roll by, along with decorated trucks and musicians
who played jazz and blues. The parade performers danced in colorful costumes. A
dozen men in one group were dressed as Elvis Presley. Another group of women
performers wore long gowns, white wigs, and masks.
Most people
in the audience also wore costumes, make up, and masks. My friends and I also
dresses in costumes. We shouted and played a drum to get the attention of the
people on the floats. We wanted them to throw us their plastic beads.
At sundown,
we walked to the old French Quarter, where people in costumes walked in the street.
We sang, danced, and enjoyed the music. The festivities lasted all night long,
and in the early morning we headed home. We were tired and hungry, but
satisfied with our wonderful Mardi Gras experience.

My Two Homes
There are two places that have had profound
impact in my life.(simple)One of them is New York City, and the other is
Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. (compound)When
you compare them, they seem like dramatically different places, but they have
some things in common, and I love them both.(compound)
There
are many reasons why New York seems like my home away from home.(simple) Both cities are striking and
distinctive.(simple) For example,
each has its own nickname.(simple)
Everyone knows New York is “the Big Apple”.(simple)
Quetzaltenango is known as “Xela” (pronounced shey-la), which is a lot of
easier to say! Second, both cities have a central Park where people like to go
and walk.(complex) Although Central
Park in Xela is smaller, its tropical flowers and colonial architecture mean it
is just a beautiful as New York’s.(compound)
Furthermore, when you walk around Xela, you find many tourist and people from
other countries, just like in New York.(compound)
For me, this means conversations in Xela are just interesting as conversation
in New York.(simple)
Despite their similarities, these cities are
different.(simple) Life in Xela is
more colorful and the pace of life is slower.(compound) For this reason, whenever I return to Xela, it is like
an escape.(simple) When I arrive,
the first thing I notice is the color.(simple)
In New York, many people wear black to be stylish, but in Xela stylish clothing
is the rainbow-colored clothing of the indigenous people.(compound) And because Xela is smaller, the beautiful green
mountains outside the city are always visible.(complex) The second thing I notice is the pace of life. They say
New York never sleeps, and it must be true, because I always see people walking
and cars on the streets, even late at night.compound, complex) In the evening, my Guatemalan city definitely
sleeps.(simple) Some younger people
go out dancing and some families take a walk in the city’s Central Park, but by
ten o’clock the streets are pretty deserted.(compound) On the other hand, New Yorkers are often in such a
hurry, they don’t even stop to eat.(simple)
For breakfast they buy food on the street, and eat it while they are walking or
on the subway.(compound) At lunch
they order food from work and eat at their desks.(compound) In Xela people eat their breakfast at home and most come
home from work for a much more relaxed and longer lunch.(compound)
In conclusion, these are the two
cities I love.(simple) For me, both
are home, are unique, and are filled with interesting people.(compound) These places represent the

ESSAY 5
Why Students Are
Poor
It
is easy to recognize a college student because he or she is carrying books and
usually wearing old pants or jeans and a T-shirt. You will not see a college
student driving a new car. Instead, you will see him at a bus stop or on a
bicycle. And at mealtimes, a college student is more likely to be eating a
slice of pizza than dining in a fine restaurant. Very few college students have
extra money to spend on clothes, cars, or good food. There are two main reasons why being poor is an unavoidable part of the
college experience.
The first reason
college student are poor is that they cannot work full-time. An eighteen
year-old is an adult with the needs and wants of an adult; however, if that
young person is taking course at time as possible studying. Therefore, the
students have to sacrifice the extra money that a job would provide in order to
have freedom to concentrate on classes.
A
second reason college students have little money is that they have other
expenses that working adults do not have. A college student must pay tuition
fees every semester. A full-time student usually takes three or four classes
each semester, and the fees for these classes can cost thousands of dollars per
year. Also, student needs to buy several expensive textbooks each semester. A
single textbook can cost as much as a hundred dollars. Other necessary expenses
include computers, paper, pens, notebooks, and other items needed for school
projects.
Many students cannot afford to
attend college full-time, so they have a job and go to school part-time, but
they are still poor because of the cost of attending college. Fortunately, the
causes of student poverty are temporary. Most students do not mind because they
have the hope that a college degree will get them a good job and the will have
good prospects in the future.

ESSAY 6
A Process of Digestion
The digestive process is
important in maintaining the lives of living organisms and in providing them
with needed energy.(compound) Groups
of organs, such as the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines, work together
to perform this complex task.(compound)
Digestion is theprocess of breaking down food from large molecules into small
ones to makeit easier for absorption. The
three major steps involved in the digestive process are ingestion, digestion,
and absorption.
Ingestion, which occurs in the
mouth, is the first step of the digestive process. (simple) After food enters the mouth, the teeth chew it.(simple) Saliva, which is produced by
the salivary glands, plays a major role in breaking down the food into smaller
pieces.(simple) These small pieces
travel to the stomach through the esophagus. (simple)
In the stomach, the second step of
the digestive process begins.(simple)
When the chewed food reaches the bottom of the esophagus, a valve lets the food
enter the stomach.(simple)
Contraction of the stomach wall mixes the food.(simple) Acidic gastric juices, which are secreted by the gastric
glands in the stomach, help in mixing the food and in turning it intoa partial
liquid so it will have the ability to move into the small intestine.(compound)In the small intestine,
enzymes are secreted, and digestion is completed.(compound)
The last step in the digestive
process is absorption.(simple)
Absorption takes place in the small intestine.(simple) The wall of the small intestine is lined with small,
finger like projections called villi.(simple)
Small molecules of food are absorbed by the huge number of villi.(simple) Someof these absorbed
molecules enter the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the whole body. Simple)
In conclusion, the digestive process involves three major
steps: ingestion, digestion, and absorption.(simple) Ingestion, which occurs in the mouth, helps to increase
the surface are of the food particles and prepares them for digestion.(compound) In the stomach, digestion
begins, and it continues until it reaches the small intestine, where absorption
takes place.(compound) The digestive
process maintains organisms' lives by providing them with energy needed for
different functions.(simple)
